Volunteer at Free Arts this Summer, Work with Wing Young-Huie
Many of you know that I have been working with a non-profit called Free Arts MN for the last year. It has been a deeply gratifying experience, and it is relatively small investment of time per week to give back to the community and make a huge difference in the lives of troubled kids. Please consider getting involved. It's one hour a week, and over the Summer many groups will be working with Wing Young-Huie on a photography project for the MIA.
Professionally this organization has helped me broaden my community ties and bult my resume considerably. I have learned a lot about teaching, and about just how lucky I am in life to even be in a position to do this kind of work. Please peruse the listed website and get in touch with Rebecca Johnson (Bo' Press and UMN art alum) at Rebecca@freeartsminnesota.org.
Organizations like this depend on volunteers to give one hour a week of their time - and the difference is really huge. The reach and impact of Free Arts is growing quickly - but they need you, positive role models, artists, teachers. We are frequently short on the number of men in these groups, and it would be amazing to see established artists and faculty in these rooms. The impact of this is so important - just a positive, consistent presence from week to week in what are often deeply troubled young lives.
There are a lot of sites in the greater TC at many different times. The groups meet for one hour at a given site and introduce an art project - in the case of Summer meetings (fewer locations), the projects will be directed by Wing Young-Huie. It is really amazing to see an established artist doing this in the community.
Great experience and resume builder. Contact me with questions!
